Requirements: Mac OS X 10.4.3 and Internet access
My first Mac OS X Dashboard Widget ever. Use this widget to check the relative humidity for your local city (currently U.S. cities only). A classic hygrometer dial makes it easy to check the humidity at a glance. The widget also displays a list of baking activities that are not recommended for the current humidity level. Information is obtained from the NOAA web services and a service on mertsock.com. Version 1.0 is currently being alpha tested by my favorite pastry chef; I will release the widget into the wild as soon as testing completes.
Installation and Usage
Mac OS X v.10.4 Tiger is required. If you’re using Safari, click the download link. When the widget download is complete, the widget installer appears. Click Install if you want the widget installed on your Mac. If you’re using a browser other than Safari, click the download link. When the widget download is complete, open the downloaded file to extract the widget. Then open the widget file to show the widget installer. You can delete these files after installation.
The first time you use Pastry Humidity, you need to tell it what area you live in. Click the “i” info button, located on the face of the hygrometer, to configure the widget. To change the weather station, use the NOAA station link to search for the nearest weather station: after opening the NOAA station web page, use the Find a state control to begin browsing for a station. Choose the best city or station name in the list that appears. At the end of the city/station name, you will see a four-letter code beginning with K: this is the code you enter in the widget for the station name. Click Done to be done. I know this is a bit tedious. Version 2.0 of the widget will allow station selection by zip code or city name in addition to the four-letter code.
