Independent Study

Finally got officially registered for my independent study for this quarter at RIT. The title of the study is “Deformable Object Recognition”. I will specifically study the implementation of the techniques discussed in the paper Obj Cut by Kumar, Torr, and Zisserman (2005 Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR’05)). The implementation will be in relation to the Naturespy/Eyes in the Forest project and the Gavin Page’s M.S. thesis.

Simply put, the goal of this independent study will be to investigate an improved technique for automatically finding and identifying animals in photos and video.

I have read the Obj Cut paper and Gavin’s thesis. The next steps are to read more of the foundations of this topic—deformable object recognition and Markov models—and create a photo database of animals.

This independent study may be a step toward an actual M.S. thesis.
