Sign Language Class

Today (well, Wednesday) was my first American Sign Language (ASL) class, taught by students in the National Technical Institute for the Deaf at RIT. In addition to the basics of ASL, I will be learning some things about deaf culture and how to be a good listener/communicator.

The class has a no-voice policy so all communication is in ASL and written language. For those that don’t know, ASL is not a direct translation of the spoken English language. From what I know so far, signs are flexible and context-sensitive in ways that are different from English words and phrases.

So I think this will be a good learning experience and will hopefully expand horizons or something…
